Pres. Paul Cotton reports the death of Russ Beane's father-in-law, Lawrence "Red" Akerman, aged 85, on August 24. Our condolences go out to his family.

Pres. Paul Cotton advises we received a thank-you note from Camp Spaulding for our recent donation.

Field Trip
Pres. Paul Cotton, Warren Mitchell, Steve Loughlin, and Nancy Williams will be touring the Laconia Library on Wednesday.

Don't Show Up
Pres. Paul Cotton reminded everyone that we will not be meeting Monday, September 5, due to the Labor Day holiday.

Scholarship Matters
Exec. Dir. Joan Cormier, Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, presented the club with a plaque for our ongoing support and invited us to their 50th anniversary celebration on February 16, 2006. Since our club's initial participation in 1956, we have donated $81,575 in 212 awards to 172 students. Karen Bianco introduced Saralee Wheeler, daughter of former member Bill Wheeler, to the club. She received scholarship help towards her graduation in Phys. Ed. from Boston University. She taught in Massachusetts for twenty year.

Happy Dollars
Dianne Zawacki had a buck for attending the grand opening of the Milford Boys & Girls Club; and Steve Loughlin had $9 for Ed Chertok's 90th birthday as did Ed Chertok.

Guest Speakers
This writer introduced Community Affairs Dir. Christopher Boothby, Lakes Region General Hospital, to the club. He points out that over the last 5 years the government has contributed less than $22 million to the hospital. Endowments and block grants have helped make up for some of the shortfall. What also has helped is the Franklin Hospital being designated an area critical access facility, management efficiency, and increased philanthropic help. Michael Cosgrove, LNA, is a nursing school student who pointed out that due to clinical staff shortages, it is even more necessary to train and retain nurses. As a side note, the hospital sees over 65,000 people a year. For more information go to
