Guest Speaker
This writer introduced Chief Kenneth L. Erikson, Laconia Fire Dept., to the club. 24 years in the fire service and 2-1/2 in Laconia, Erikson has tried to guide the department from a reactive one to proactive by pre-profiling city structures and encouraging child car seat's by offering professional installation services. He also cites their partnership with Lakes Region General Hospital in providing Emergency Medical Services with 10 paramedics and 12 intermediates. He also makes a point of adjusting schedules to anticipate peak service times. Chief Erikson made special note of the continued and accelerating increase in city buildings being serviced and consequent increased calls for service. Recent budget cuts have forced the curtailing of staff training and public education. Now they receive 911 calls every 2.3 hours and are unavailable an average of three times each day.
