President Betty Ballantyne opened the meeting by thanking all in attendance and introducing our guests.

RUN OR WALK FOR FRANKLIN VNH & HOSPICE:

Ryan Howe, the Director of Fundraising for the Franklin VNA & Hospice came to the meeting to invite our members and friends to participate in the Franklin VNA & Hospice 1st Annual 5K Run & Walk. The event will take place on Saturday April 27th at 9 am. Details are included in the poster below:

N E W SS F R O MM T H EE P R E S I D E N T :

K.A.R.E.S:
Betty Ballantyne reported on a successful Kiwanis K.A.R.E.S. event that was held on March 5th at Woodland Heights. She thanked Joe Collie, Keith Styles and Kathy Calvin for attending. She noted that they celebrated the birthday of Doctor Seuss with a birthday cake and some of his stories.

KEY CLUB UPDATE:
Betty reported the LHS Key Club will be doing a “Penny Wars” fundraiser with each class in a competition to raise the most money. At the next Kiwanis Board meeting Betty plans to discuss if the Club would be interested in supporting the winning class with a special prize. Betty also reported the Key Club will be participating in a Spring Clean Up of Bond Beach in Lakeport on Saturday, April 13.

KIWANIS MID-WINTER CONFERENCE:
Betty reported attending this conference on Saturday, March 9 at Sturbridge, MA. There were approximately 125 in attendance.

SECOND ANNUAL KIWANIS FREE THROW COMPETITION:
Betty reported that 44 boys and girls attended the event that was held on March 16th at the Laconia Middle School . She thanked the volunteers for all their efforts, before, during and after the event. She was also thankful for the sponsors who provided the T-shirts for the children and adults. The raffle prizes which helped the club net nearly $700. Those monies will be targeted toward LAYBL, Gilford and Franklin Parks & Recs. Betty noted we had lots of help from LAYBL, Robbie Prescott family, Key Club as well as Kiwanis members and friends of Kiwanis. DISTRICT NEWS AND OTHER CLUB NEWS:

Bob Willey reported the Concord Kiwanis Club will be celebrating their 100th anniversary on Saturday, April 6th. Laconia Kiwanis Club members are invited to attend. It is interesting to note, it was the Concord Kiwanis Club that sponsored the formation of the Laconia Kiwanis Club in 1927.

Bob also reported the Hooksett Kiwanis Club has their Earth Day clean up on Saturday April 20th from 10 am to 1 pm. A pancake breakfast will be held prior to the event (8:30 – 10 am) at the Hooksett Congregational Church.

 

 

 

Meal Contributions by Members: $120 was collected

Happy Dollars: $45 was collected

 

GUEST SPEAKER:

Betty Ballantyne introduced Carrie Chandler, a Board member of the Laconia Human Relations Committee. Betty noted that Carrie Chandler:
• Is a native of Laconia
• Holds a BS Degree in Psychology and minor in Gerontology from Plymouth State College
• Holds an MS Degree in Gerontology, Concentration in Public Administration from Medical College of Virginia
• Has worked in long term care administration during her entire career –
o -worked with older adults (administrator at Taylor Community and Forestview Manor)
o -worked with persons with intellectual disabilities and acquired brain injuries (oversaw Case Management for 1500 at Lakes Region Community Services)
o -worked with persons living with mental illness (Quality Improvement at Lakes Region Mental Health Center)
o -currently Director of Wesley Woods in Gilford NH – an independent retirement community of 39 homes – part of the New England Deaconess Association out of Concord MA, a continuing care retirement community.
• Married to Howard Chandler for almost 29 years. Howie, who is now retired, enjoys taking his disabled 143-pound Newfoundland dog, Ellie, on motorcycle rides in the side car.
• Has 3 step kids – Kellie and Makenzie are married with kids in NY; Trevor is married, living in San Francisco running for political office.
• Has a 24-year-old son, Joshua, who graduated from Plymouth with a dual degree in bio-chemistry and psychology. Joshua is presently working as an EMT for Stewart’s Ambulance and he is enrolled in Masters of Health Care Management through UNH. He is also enlisted in the Army National Guard (medic) and hopes to get into Physician Assistant School through the military.
• Currently serving on the Board for Helping Hands for the Lakes Region and the Laconia Human Relations Committee

Carrie handed out literature explain the history and mission of the Laconia Human Relations Committee. During her presentation, she discussed Multicultural Fest, an event started by the Human Relations Committee, and the involvement of the Laconia Kiwanis Club. She reported that the “Kiwanis Kids Kraft Korner” was very successful last year looks forward to having the Club participate again this year. The event is planned for Saturday, September 7th, from 10AM to 3PM.
