INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER - KEITH STYLES:
In the absence of Betty Ballantyne, Keith’s sponsor, President Bill Gile was pleased to stand in to formally introduce Keith Styles. Bill noted that Keith came to the Club two months earlier to volunteer his services in youth development. He reported that Keith, an employee of Bank of New Hampshire, became involved in Kiwanis K.A.R.E.S. and subsequently, as co-chairman (with Betty Ballantyne) of the recent Kiwanis Free Throw event. President Bill noted that the Club is very happy to have Keith as a new member. Bill then turned over the induction to Lt. Governor Bob Willey. Bob gave a background on Kiwanis International, which was started in 1915. He noted the organization has over 500,000 members internationally in over 80 countries and that the organization prides itself on dealing with youth, an area Keith has expressed an interest in serving. GUEST SPEAKER:
Steve Loughlin introduced our guest speaker, Kirk Beattie.
Steve noted that Kirk is no stranger to the Laconia Kiwanis Club since he was our guest in 2019 and 2022. Both times he made presentations regarding the Laconia Fire Department. Kirk was a firefighter for over 25 years and most recently Chief of the Laconia Fire Department. However, in 2022 he made a career change and, as of last October, he is now the City Manager of Laconia.
During his presentation, Kirk discussed several major topics which included:
• The 2023 Pumpkinfest – now back to two-day event
• 2023 Bike Week – celebrating its 100th Anniversary
• 2023-24 City Budget – the first draft will be submitted to the City Council in the next week
• State School Development – off to a good start from the city’s perspective
• Housing Task Force – from a homeless perspective
• Redevelopment of Laconia – good things are happening in Downtown, Lakeport, and the Weirs
Kirk Beattie addresses the group.
