LACONIA KIWANIS CLUB AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Laconia Kiwanis Club, through the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation, has been awarding scholarships for college bound seniors annually for 68 years. When Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club was one of the original eight donors!  At that time, the Club donated a total of $200 to two recipients. In most cases, scholarships from the Laconia Kiwanis Club are awarded to active LHS Key Club members and Kiwanis related students. This year, the Laconia Kiwanis Club awarded 13 scholarships totaling $8,250.  Recipients of this year's scholarships included two current Laconia High School graduates Haley Richter and Ava Whitton, Gilford High School graduate Jordyn Byars, Belmont High School graduate Emma Winslow as well as nine recent graduates.

Since the inception of the Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation in 1956, the Laconia Kiwanis Club has awarded scholarships totaling $145,725.

The Laconia Kiwanis Club handles the administration of the Smith Memorial Scholarship, which was established in honor of Charlie Smith. Charlie Smith was a Laconia Kiwanis Club member during the 1970’s into the early 1990’s.

Because of his active participation and hard work, Charlie Smith was recognized as Kiwanian of the Year in 1982 and again in 1988. Charlie was renowned and respected as an agriculturist and specialist in soils, grasses and hays. While still a student at UNH, he opened Smith’s Apple Orchard in Belmont, which later became one of the area’s first “pick your own” orchards. (The orchard was sold to Rob and Wende Richter in 1985.)

As a Laconia City Councilman during the 1980’s, Charlie was a major proponent for upgrading the outdated cinder track at Opechee Park. The new track was named Smith Track for Charlie Smith and Erwin Smith (former Laconia track coach) “in honor of their years of service and dedication to youth.”

Since its inception in 1997, the Charles M. Smith – Kiwanis Club of Laconia Award has awarded scholarships totaling $19,000 which includes scholarships to this year’s recipients: Dylan Dickey and Noah Mousseau. While students at Laconia High School, both Dylan Dickey and Noah Mousseau were active on the track team.

KIWANIS K.A.R.E.S
June 6th was the final K.A.R.E.S. session at Woodland Heights for the 2022-2023 school year. Representing the Laconia Kiwanis Club were Kathy Calvin, Keith Styles and Betty Ballantyne. Betty Ballantyne reported the session was well received and that the volunteers were all spread into many rooms. Below are photos of happy kids.

HELPING BOYS AND GIRLS ENJOY SUMMER:

On behalf of the Laconia Kiwanis Club, Zach Dea was pleased to present a check to Laura Tarbell, Site Director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region. Proceeds will be used to help fund tuition costs for up to four local needy students so they can attend four weeks of summer camp at the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region.

KIWANIS CLUB GOES GAGA OVER NEW PIT:

On June 28th, members of the Laconia Kiwanis Club met at Opechee Point (the northern section of Opechee Park) to erect a new Gaga pit. In the past, a Gaga pit had been located directly across the street from the Boys & Girls Club but it was removed about three years ago in preparation for the existing skateboard park.

FYI: Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. Dubbed a kinder gentler version of dodge ball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball.

This past February, Betty Ballantyne contacted Amy Lovisek, at Laconia’s Parks & Recreation, and questioned how the Kiwanis Club might be helpful to the children in the community. At that time, a new Gaga pit was discussed as Amy noted the game was greatly missed by the area children. With that in mind, Betty coordinated the Kiwanis Club in efforts to build a new Gaga pit. Despite a rainy day, several members of the Kiwanis Club along with family members and friends successfully installed a new Gaga pit at Opechee Point.

Participants included:
Kiwanis Members: Betty Ballantyne, Phil Bonafide, Bill Gile, Keith Styles and Brian Winslow
Kiwanis Family and Friends: Jackie Bonafide (Phil’s wife), Kathy Calvin (Honorary Kiwanian), Candace & Neil Eastman (friends of Kiwanis) Zack & Grace Laurent (children of Scott Laurent) Brad Geltz (friend of Kiwanis), John Intorcio (friend of Kiwanis) Brendan Morrison (friend of Kiwanis) and Amy Lovisek (Director of Recreation & Facilities at Laconia Parks & Recreation). The following are a few memories from the event.
