At this time, there is no Special Olympic Ski Team at Gunstock, but it is their hope to have one someday. In the Adaptive Program, volunteer coaches go through an intense 6 day training period and then work with other trainers in helping Special Olympians learn to ski. They have developed a program for autistic children and for those with developmental or physical delays. They have special equipment geared to help individuals based on their particular handicap. Mike demonstrated the Mountain Man, a chair on skis device that is tethered by an instructor from behind, but steered by a rider using their torso in the case of no mobility in their legs and arms. It holds up to 250 lbs. Gunstock shares its race course with the program and provides volunteer coaches with a seasons pass for themselves and a friend. Their fundraiser this year is a raffle for a snowmobile and ATV and ticket sales will begin at Octoberfest at Gunstock, schedules for the weekend of October 7th and 8th.
